Interview: Kelly Macdonald on No Country for Old Men

Kelly MacdonaldThe Coen Brothers have returned with No Country for Old Men – an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s 2005 novel and now the most critically acclaimed film of the year.

Set in West Texas it is the story of a hunter named Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) who stumbles across a suitcase of cash after a drug deal gone wrong.

He is then pursued by a ruthless hitman (Javier Bardem) whilst a local sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) tries to keep up with them.

Kelly Macdonald plays Llewelyn’s wife, Carla Jean, who is also forced into hiding whilst her husband is on the run.

I spoke to her recently about the film, how she got cast, what it is like working with the Coens and the performances of her fellow actors in the film.

The Cinema Review: Enchanted / Bee Movie / Youth Without Youth

This week on the podcast we review Enchanted, Bee Movie and Youth Without Youth.

The Cinema Review 14-12-07

Enchanted – This is a Disney movie that has fun with the traditional conventions of a Disney movie. It starts as an animated film about a Princess (Amy Adams) who gets pushed down a well and ends up as a human in contemporary New York. There she is befriended by a single father (Patrick Dempsey) and followed by her Prince (James Marsden) whilst an evil Queen (Susan Sarandon) keeps trying to poison her. Kevin Lima directs and Timothy Spall co-stars.

Bee Movie – The latest film from DreamWorks Animation sees Jerry Seinfeld return after a prolonged absence as a bee who ventures out of his hive into the world of humans. There he befriends a florist (Renee Zellweger) and after learning about how honey is exploited, decides to sue the human race. Simon J Smith and Steve Hickner direct whilst Chris Rock, John Goodman, Robert Duvall, Sting and Oprah Winfrey co-star.

Youth Without Youth – Francis Ford Coppola returns to the directors chair for the first time since 1998 with this adaptation of the Romanian novel by Mircea Eliade. Tim Roth stars as an old man who is struck by lightning and starts to get progressively younger. He then goes into exile and reunites with his lost love, Laura (Alexandra Maria Lara) and works to complete his research into the origins of human language. Bruno Ganz and Matt Damon co-star.

Interview: Simon J Smith on Bee Movie

Simon J Smith - Director of Bee MovieThe new animated film Bee Movie comes out this week and I recently interviewed one of the directors, Simon J Smith.

It tells the story of a bee (voiced by Jerry Seinfeld) who ventures out from his hive into the real world, where he meets a florist named Vanessa (voiced by Renee Zellwegger) and ends up getting involved in the world of humans.

It also features the voices of Matthew Broderick, Megan Mullally, John Goodman, Chris Rock, Kathy Bates, Oprah Winfrey and Eddie Izzard.

We speak about the plot of the film, how a random conversation in the Hamptons between Steven Spielberg and Jerry Seinfeld led to the movie being made, how he got hired and the process of making a big budget animated film.

The Cinema Review: The Golden Compass

The Golden CompassThis week sees the release of eagerly anticipated fantasy film The Golden Compass.

It is based on the first book in Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy about a young girl’s coming of age in a parallel universe.

The central character is a young girl named Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) who has grown up in the world of an Oxford college in a parallell universe.

Though similar in many ways to our world the most striking difference is that everyone has a dæmon – an animal that co-exists with them and follows them around.

Lyra and her dæmon Pantalaimon (voiced by Freddie Highmore) find out about the existence of “Dust“, a substance of great interest to her uncle Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig), the enigmatic Marisa Coulter (Nicole Kidman) and the ruling power known as The Magisterium.

When a friend of hers is kidnapped, Lyra journeys to the North in order to find him where she encounters a variety of characters including a witch (Eva Green), an aeronaut (Sam Eliott) and an armoured bear (voiced by Ian McKellen).

The Cinema Review: The Assassination of Jesse James / Hitman / The Nines

This week we review The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Hitman and The Nines.

The Cinema Review: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford / Hitman / The Nines

The Assassination Of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford – An unusual look at the iconic western outlaw Jesse James with Brad Pitt in the lead role and Casey Affleck as his assassin Robert Ford. Taking a slow and unconventional approach, it examines the myth of James and details the final phase of his life where he tries to evade justice and retreats to his trusted inner circle. Directed by Andrew Dominik (who made Chopper in 2000) and shot by Roger Deakins.

Hitman – Based on the popular computer game franchise this sees Timothy Olyphant (last seen as the villain in Die Hard 4) play Agent 47, a secret assassin who performs hits for a shadowy organisation. Only after a job in Russia he is double crossed and has to find out why with the help of a prostitute (Olga Kurylenko), whilst having to deal with an Interpol agent (Dougray Scott) on his tail. Directed by Xavier Gens.

The Nines – Writer and director John August has made a film split into three sections with Ryan Reynolds, Hope Davis and Melissa McCarthy in the lead roles. The first is about an actor going through rehab in his own house, the second features a reality show about an actual TV show and the third is about a video game designer whose car breaks down on an isolated road.

The Cinema Review: The Darjeeling Limited / Rescue Dawn

This week we take a look at The Darjeeling Limited and Rescue Dawn.

The Cinema Review: The Darjeeling Limited / Rescue Dawn

The Darjeeling Limited is the fifth film from director Wes Anderson and stars Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman and Adrien Brody as three estranged brothers who go on a train journey through India. On the way they bicker and discover things about their family and themselves. Like Anderson’s previous films it looks great, has a fantastic soundtrack and features lots of well-to-do characters getting up to quirky things.

Rescue Dawn sees legendary director Werner Herzog revisit the subject of his 1997 documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly, with a feature film about Dieter Dengler. He was a German-born US fighter pilot who was shot down over Laos during the Vietnam war. He was then a POW for several months before managing to escape and surviving an epic struggle through the jungle. Christian Bale plays Dengler and Steve Zahn is his fellow POW named Duane Martin. All the usual Herzog themes are here and there are some suprising twists too.

Werner Herzog on Rescue Dawn

Werner Herzog directing Christian Bale and Steve Zahn in Rescue Dawn

In a career spanning over 40 years director Werner Herzog has created some of the most remarkable films in modern cinema.

From his early works like Signs of Life, his collaborations with actor Klaus Kinski (Aguirre: Wrath of God, Nosferatu and Fitzcarraldo), dramas such as Heart of Glass and Stroszek, through to more recent films like Grizzly Man, he has demonstrated a remarkable ability to create dazzling cinema in extreme circumstances.

His latest film is Rescue Dawn, which is the story of Dieter Dengler, a German-born US fighter pilot who was shot down over Laos during the Vietnam war. He was a POW for several months before somehow managing to escape after an epic struggle through the jungle.

He first covered the story in his 1997 documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly and now Rescue Dawn is a feature film of the same story with Christian Bale in the lead role of Dengler.

I spoke with Werner in London recently about the film and other aspects of his career.

The Cinema Review: American Gangster / Beowulf / Brick Lane

This week we review American Gangster, Beowulf and Brick Lane.

The Cinema Review 16-11-07

American Gangster is the true life story of New York crime boss Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) who created a drug empire in the early 70s by importing cheap heroin direct from Asia. Directed by Ridley Scott it explores how a New York cop Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) discovered and exposed his operation.

Beowulf is the big budget animated version of the old English poem about a medieval warrior (Ray Winstone) who travels to a kingdom plagued by a monster named Grendel. When Beowulf defeats it, he has to deal with the mother (Angelina Jolie), who is an altogether different proposition. Using motion capture technology, director Robert Zemeckis creates a 3-D version of the tale.

Brick Lane is the adaptation of Monica Ali’s best selling book about a Bangladeshi woman (Tannishtha Chatterjee) who settles in East London with a loveless marriage to her husband (Satish Kaushik). Feeling isolated and trapped she has an affair with a younger man (Christopher Simpson). Directed by Sarah Gavron.

Beowulf Press Conference at the London IMAX

I went along to the BFI IMAX recently to see the new Beowulf film in 3-D directed by Robert Zemeckis.

It uses motion capture technology to retell the old English poem and Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Crispin Glover, producer Steve Starkey plus writers Roger Avary and Neil Gaiman discussed it afterwards at the press conference.

The interior was decked out in a medieval theme with drummers, wooden barrels and candles.

I’ll post a full review of the film in the podcast on Friday but until then here are some photos I took of the day:

Hotel Chevalier to screen in the UK

Hotel ChevalierGood news for Wes Anderson fans. The short film Hotel Chevalier will screen ahead of UK showings of The Darjeeling Limited when the film opens in a couple of weeks.

Here is the official press release:

Wes Anderson’s short film HOTEL CHEVALIER will screen in cinemas across the UK with THE DARJEELING LIMITED, when it opens on November 23rd, through Twentieth Century Fox.

The brief coda to a doomed romance and the prologue to THE DARJEELING LIMITED, the 12-minute HOTEL CHEVALIER is set in a hotel room in Paris, and stars Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman.

Since its release in the US, THE DARJEELING LIMITED has been performing extremely well at the box office and continues to expand into more screens.

HOTEL CHEVALIER was originally available exclusively as a download on the Apple site in the US. According to recent US press reports, download numbers were close to 500,000, making it one of Apple’s most successful ever.

In THE DARJEELING LIMITED, three American brothers who have not spoken to each other in a year set off on a train voyage across India with a plan to find themselves and bond with each other – to become brothers again like they used to be.

Their “spiritual quest”, however, veers rapidly off-course (due to events involving over-the-counter pain killers, Indian cough syrup, and pepper spray), and they eventually find themselves stranded alone in the middle of the desert with eleven suitcases, a printer, and a laminating machine.

At this moment, a new, unplanned journey suddenly begins. Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman star in this film about their adventure and their friendship.

After seeing The Darjeeling Limited with Hotel Chevalier attached I was a little puzzled that they initailly released it in the US without it.

But I’m glad they’ve decided to put them together as they fit perfectly and it adds a little extra to the film as shorts are a little unusual these days in front of mainstream features.

The Cinema Review: Lions for Lambs / Into the Wild / Planet Terror

This week the cinema releases under the microscope are Lions for Lambs, Into the Wild and Planet Terror.

The Cinema Review 09-11-07

Lions for Lambs is a drama dealing with the current war on terror by focusing on three interconnected stories: a Senator (Tom Cruise) briefs a journalist (Meryl Streep) about a new government strategy for Afghanistan conflict; a college professor (Robert Redford) tries to awaken a promising but apathetic student (Andrew Garfield); and two US soldiers (Michael Pena and Derek Luke) become stranded on an Afghan mountain.

Into the Wild is Sean Penn‘s fourth film as a director and tells the true story of Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch), who dropped out of his middle class background to wander the US for two years, before living in the wilds of Alaska. Along the way he meets a variety of characters amidst the backdrop of the American landscape. Catherine Keener, Hal Holbrook, Jena Malone, Marcia Gay Harden and William Hurt co-star.

Planet Terror is the other half of the Grindhouse project, where Robert Rodriguez teamed up with Quentin Tarantino to make a double bill of exploitation-style films. Sadly, the film was split in two after a disappointing run at the US box office. Death Proof was the Tarantino film and now Rodriguez’s is released here. It is the tale of a mysterious green mist that turns a Texan town into zombies and a group of survivors (that includes Rose McGowan, Freddy Rodriguez and Michael Biehn) who must escape.

The Cinema Review: 30 Days of Night / Elizabeth: The Golden Age / The Lookout

This week, we take a look at three of the big cinema releases out today in the UK.

The Cinema Review 02-11-07

30 Days Of Night is a vampire film from director David Slade (who made Hard Candy) with an interesting premise involving a town in Alaska that is dark for 30 days of the year.

When a bunch of vampires turn up they realise they are really in their element as they can feed on the townsfolk non-stop for a month. A local sheriff (Josh Hartnett) and some plucky townsfolk try to survive the mayhem that ensues.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age is the sequel to the 1998 film about Queen Elizabeth I (Cate Blanchett) who now finds her rule openly challenged by the Spanish King Philip II, who is determined to restore England to Catholicism.

Unable and unwilling to pursue her love for explorer Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen), she lives vicariously through her lady-in-waiting, Bess (Abbie Cornish).

The Lookout is an intriguing and unconventional thriller about a young man (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who’s life is wrecked in a car accident.

He then tries to maintain a normal life working as a janitor in a bank, but gets involved in a heist scheme. Written and directed by Scott Frank, it co-stars Jeff Daniels, Isla Fisher and Carla Gugino.

Box Office Cinema Thoughts

The appeal of Saw 4

Saw 4 posterAlthough it wasn’t press screened for UK or US critics Saw IV took a huge slice of the box office over the weekend.

After the relatively disappointing performance of Hostel 2 in the summer, some were predicting that the recent cycle of horror films featuring torture had run its course.

With a highly impressive weekend total of $32.1 million it seems that is not the case, at least with the Saw franchise. I went to a screening in Central London at 5pm and was surprised at how many people were there.

It wasn’t full by any means but it was noticeable at how varied the audience was – it was fairly mixed between males and females of different ages.

For those who haven’t seen the films – or those who avoid them – they all revolve around a serial killer mastermind called Jigsaw. In each film he sets a series of traps (often involving diabolical devices) for his victims which allows them the opportunity to escape if they are prepared to sacrifice something, usually part of their body.

Saw was actually pretty good, two was OK, three poor and four just OK again. But can Saw V  sustain what is a remarkably profitable franchise for Lionsgate? Although they are sadistic and gruesome, people clearly want to check them out. But why?

Is it a craving to see shady characters get tortured in ever more elaborate ways? Do people just enjoy the Se7en-like structure in each film which involves a serial killer leaving a riddle for the cops? My feeling is that it could be a little of both.

But what do you think makes them so successful with audiences?

Leave your comments below or email me.

The Cinema Review: Sicko / Eastern Promises

This week, we take a look at two films which screened as part of the London Film Festival and go on general release this weekend.

Sicko and Eastern Promises

Sicko is the new documentary from Michael Moore and it explores the health care system in the United States.

It follows Moore as he travels the country exploring various horror stories involving health insurance companies and documents his trips to Cuba, England and France where he compares their health care systems to the one back home.

Eastern Promises
is the latest film from director David Cronenberg and is a drama set amongst the dark world of Russian gangsters in contemporary London.

Naomi Watts stars as a midwife who discovers a Russian crime family after a girl dies in her hospital. Viggo Mortensen, Vincent Cassell and Armin Mueller-Stahl co-star.

London Film Festival 2007: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Today we look at The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which was on tonight in the Time Out special screening.

Mathieu Amalric and Marie-Josée Croze in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

It is the story of Jean-Dominique Bauby, a former French journalist and editor of Elle magazine who was paralysed by a stroke at the age of 43.

Although he could only movie his left eye, he managed to write a memoir of his condition through a system of blinking to nurses and interpreters.

Director Julian Schnabel (who made Before Night Falls in 2000) won Best Director at Cannes earlier this year and it stars Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josée Croze and Max Von Sydow.

Interestingly, there is a big Steven Spielberg connection with this film. Not only is it produced by Kathleen Kennedy and shot by Janusz Kaminski (two longtime Spielberg collaborators) but Amalric and Crozee were both in Munich.

The film opens in the UK on February 8th.

John Carney on Once

John Carney - Director of OnceThe new film Once is out at UK cinemas this weekend and I recently spoke to director John Carney about the film.

It is a charming tale of the relationship between a Dublin busker (Glen Hansard) and a Czech girl (Marketa Irglova) he meets on the street.

Featuring a lot of songs by Hansard and Irglova, it is a music film without being a musical and was a big hit at Sundance back in January.

So much so in fact that Fox Searchlight released it and the film won a lot of fans, including none other than Steven Spielberg who said:

“A little movie called Once gave me enough inspiration to last the rest of the year.”

I spoke with John about the making of the film and the success it has enjoyed over the last few months.

London Film Festival 2007: David Cronenberg on Eastern Promises

David CronenbergDavid Cronenberg has been exploring the darker edges of human nature for over 30 years and his latest film Eastern Promises opens the London Film Festival tonight.

He first came to prominence in the 1970s with films such as Shivers (1975) and Rabid (1977) and in the 80s broke through in to the mainstream with memorable films such as Scanners (1981), Videodrome (1983), The Dead Zone (1983), The Fly (1986) and Dead Ringers (1988).

Since the 1990s he has attempted ambitious literary adaptations with Naked Lunch (1991), M. Butterfly (1993), Crash (1996), eXistenZ (1999) and Spider (2002).

Two years ago, he made A History of Violence which starred Viggo Mortensen as a man whose mysterious past comes back to revisit him. It gained a number of richly deserved awards and critical plaudits.

Eastern Promises also stars Mortensen in the lead role. However, this film explores the murky world of the Russian Mafia in London after a midwife (Naomi Watts) finds the diary of girl who has died in her hospital.

I spoke with David today just a few hours before his latest film opened the festival and you can listen to it below:

The Cinema Review: Ratatouille and The Counterfeiters

On this week’s review podcast week take a look at an animated rat, some prisoners counterfeiting the British pound and a New York nanny.

RatatouilleRatatouille is the latest Pixar movie, which means that you can expect some great writing and animation.

The studio behind such gems as Toy Story, Monster’s Inc, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles have created another animation milestone.

The story is about a French rat with a taste for good food who ends up helping a budding chef in a Paris restaurant.

Brad Bird (the man behind The Incredibles in 2004) directs and and watch out for the short that precedes it called Taken, which is an alien abduction spoof.

The CounterfeitersThe Counterfeiters is the gripping true life tale about the counterfeiting operation the Nazi’s set up in the concentration camps of World War 2.

Director Stefan Ruzowitzky has crafted an absorbing tale that explores some difficult moral dilemmas.

Karl Markovics stars in the lead role as the head of the team who have to produce the fake notes or face death.

Expect this to feature as a Best Foreign Film nominees in the upcoming awards season.

We also take a brief look The Nanny Diaries – the adaptation of the popular book by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus about nannies in New York.

Scarlett Johansson stars in the central role as a nanny who has to deal with a snobbish couple (Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney) in the rich Upper East side of New York.

Stefan Ruzowitzky and Karl Markovics on The Counterfeiters

Stefan Ruzowitzky and Karl MarkovicsThe Counterfeiters tells the remarkable true life tale of the Nazi counterfeiting scheme during World War II known as Operation Bernhard.

In the latter years of the war the Nazi’s had a plan to flood the UK and US economies with false money. In order to do so they enlisted skilled prisoners in concentration camps to do this painstaking work.

I recently spoke to the director Stefan Ruzowitzky (on the left) and actor Karl Markovics (on the right), who plays the chief counterfeiter.

We discussed the story that inspired the film, the challenges of bringing it to the screen and the themes raised by the project.

More thoughts on Michael Clayton

Michael ClaytonMichael Clayton opened in the UK almost 2 weeks ago and in limited release in the US last Friday.

It’s done OK, but it really deserves to have performed better here, as it currently sits at Number 9 in the UK charts with a gross of £1,273,849. This despite great reviews and a big star in the lead.

I went to see it again on the opening weekend at the Cineworld Haymarket in London and was slightly alarmed at the empty seats. It seemed to go down well, but watching it again I realised how much of the film’s slow burning pleasures are more apparent on second viewing.

It isn’t an easy movie to digest in one go – the way it is constructed forces you to think not only about the events and characters on screen, but also about the issues and themes it raises. It is a little ‘difficult’, but in a way that is actually most welcome.

Maybe certain people will be put off by the title (a complaint I’ve heard a couple of times) or just put off by the idea of a dry legal drama. But make no mistake, this is really smart and absorbing cinema. The performances (especially George Clooney, Tom Wilkinson, Tilda Swinton and Sydney Pollack) are terrific and cinematography by Robert Elswit is especially striking in a way that isn’t obviously showy.

In some ways, it is the kind of film that some claim used to exist in the 70s but doesn’t anymore. Clooney himself made this point in a recent interview with The Times:

“I gave as a gift to my friends for Christmas last year 100 DVDs of my favourite films from 1964 to 1976. It was going to be 1965 to 1975, but that meant leaving out Strangelove and Fail-Safe. And Network and All the President’s Men and Taxi Driver and Bound for Glory. But you look at these films – you could find 10 films a year that are masterpieces. And the people who were making them were studios.”

Sadly there is some truth in that, as no mainstream studio wanted to fund it – even with a bona fide A-lister like Clooney in the lead role:

“They don’t make those films any more; you couldn’t come near making those films. This film was taken to a studio. They wouldn’t make it.”

Warner Bros are only distributing it in the States, with Pathe releasing it over here. However, it will be interesting to see how it does next week in the US when it expands from 15 to 2,400 screens.

In the meantime check out an interesting interview below where David Poland of The Hot Blog and MCN speaks to writer-director Tony Gilroy about the film:

The Cinema Review: Control & The Kingdom

Control and The Kingdom

On this week’s review podcast we take a look at two very different films – one is about Ian Curtis and Joy Division, the other a thriller set in Saudi Arabia.

Control is a biopic of Ian Curtis – the lead singer of Joy Division who died in 1980 aged just 23.

Directed by Anton Corbijn, the film explores the early years of Curtis, the formation of the band, their live and studio performances, his battle with epilepsy and the emotional turmoil that led to his untimely death. Sam Riley stars in the lead role and Samantha Morton plays his wife Debbie.

The Kingdom is a contemporary thriller that follows an FBI team who investigate a bombing of a US compound in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Jamie Foxx leads the group that includes Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper and Jason Bateman as they follow the trail of a terrorist with the help of a local officer (Ashraf Barhom). It is directed by Peter Berg and produced by Michael Mann.

We also take a brief look at the other releases this week which include And When Did You Last See Your Father?, Daywatch and The Heartbreak Kid.

Control – Interview Special

Control poster

Control is the new film about the late Ian Curtis, the lead singer of British band Joy Division, who committed suicide in 1980 at age 23.

Directed by Anton Corbijn – who worked with the band as a photographer – it generated critical raves after its world premiere in Cannes earlier this year.

It opens in the UK this week and I recently spoke to three of the actors from the film.

Sam Riley as Ian Curtis in ControlSam Riley plays Ian Curtis and we spoke about how he got the role, the audition where he had to do the distinctive Curtis-style dance, how the actors actually learned to play Joy Division’s songs and the chemistry amongst the band during filming.

We also discussed what Joy Division fans might think about the film and whether a new generation of music fans might discover the band from watching this film.

Toby KebbellToby Kebbell plays Rob Gretton, the late manager of the band. We spoke about the role Gretton’s role in Joy Division’s career, the comic relief his character provides in the film and the power of the script.

We also talked about Anton Corbijn’s desire to make a film about a band he worked with as a photographer, the film as a document of Ian Curtis’ life, shooting in black and white, his look in the film and why the story still resonates today.

Samantha MortonSamantha Morton plays Debbie Curtis – Ian’s widow and the author of ‘Touching from a Distance‘, the biography upon which the film is partly based.

In the last few years she has worked with Steven Spielberg (Minority Report), Woody Allen (Sweet and Lowdown) and Jim Sheridan (In America) as well as Anton Corbijn (she was in the Electrical Storm video Anton directed for U2 in 2002).

We spoke about getting involved with the film, her love of Joy Division’s music, how they shot the film and the importance of conveying the humour and humanity of the characters amidst the tragedy of Ian’s short life.

Jeffrey Blitz on Rocket Science

Jeffrey Blitz on Rocket ScienceJeffrey Blitz scored an unlikely hit in 2003 with the marvellous documentary Spellbound.

A simple but affecting tale of a cross section of students competing in the National Spelling Bee, it was a captivating and charming look at learning in America.

He now returns with Rocket Science, his feature film debut which is out at selected UK cinemas this week.
This also deals with high school education as it follows a young student (Reece Thompson) who joins his high school debating team despite having a stutter.

It won the Best Director prize at Sundance earlier this year and is released in selected UK cinemas this week.

I recently spoke to Jeffrey about the film, the success of Spellbound and a few other things besides.

But in the meantime we examine the following releases:

Originally part of ‘Grindhouse’ – as a double bill with Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror – it has been released as a single film in Europe due to that project flopping in the US. About 20 mins extra footage has been added for this release.

An impressive supporting cast includes Tilda Swinton, Tom Wilkinson and Sidney Pollack whilst the film is written and directed by Tony Gilroy (best know for writing the Bourne movies).

Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse on Superbad

Superbad castSuperbad is out in the UK this week and I recently spoke to the three lead actors in the film: Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

I spoke about the comedy in the film, the rise of producer Judd Apatow, what ‘McLovin’ is, how this is different from other teen movies and a good deal of other stuff too.

One of the funniest comedies to come out this year it follows three high school geeks as they struggle to buy booze for a party at which they hope to get laid. But after one of them comes up with a bad fake ID their evening spirals out of control.

Seth Rogen (who you may have seen in Knocked Up earlier this summer) stars in a supporting role as a cop and he also co-wrote the script with Evan Goldberg. Judd Apatow produces whilst Greg Mottola directs.
