Abrams<\/a> featured a new cast and a twist which cleverly incorporated old characters whilst paving the way for new stories.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially this is a prequel exploring the back story of the Enterprise crew with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1517976\/\">Chris Pine<\/a> as Kirk, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0704270\/\">Zachary Quinto<\/a> as Spock, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0757855\/\">Zoe Saldana<\/a> as Uhura, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0881631\/\">Karl Urban<\/a> as Bones and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0670408\/\">Simon Pegg<\/a> as Scotty.<\/p>\n<p>After the opening section, which explores how they came to be at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Starfleet\">Starfleet<\/a>, they get involved in a conflict with the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romulan\">Romulans<\/a>, led by the enigmatic Nero (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0051509\/\">Eric Bana<\/a>), who is after revenge.<\/p>\n<p>The production design and visual effects are excellent, but it is the script and performances which really engage, in particular the storyline which allows for the return of an old character and the beginning of a new era for the USS Enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>It is available on 1-Disc and 2-Disc DVD versions and Blu-ray Disc.<\/p>\n<p>The extras on each version break down like this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1-Disc DVD<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>English DD5.1 Surround<\/li>\n<li>Commentary by director J.J. Abrams&#8217; vision was not only to create a Star Trek that was a bigger, more action-packed spectacle, but also to make the spectacle feel real. Every aspect of production-from unique locations to the use of classic Hollywood camera tricks-was guided by this overall objective.<\/li>\n<li>Gag Reel &#8211; Bloopers featuring the entire principal cast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2-Disc DVD &#8211; As above, plus the following additional extras<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary<\/li>\n<li>To Boldly Go &#8211; Taking on the world&#8217;s most beloved science fiction franchise was no small mission. Director J.J. Abrams, writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, producer Damon Lindelof, and executive producer Bryan Burk talk about the many challenges they faced and their strategy for success.<\/li>\n<li>Casting &#8211; The producers knew their greatest task was finding the right cast to reprise these epic roles. The cast, for their part, talk about the experience of trying to capture the essence of these mythic characters. The piece concludes with a moving tribute to Leonard Nimoy.<\/li>\n<li>Aliens &#8211; Designers Neville Page and Joel Harlow talk about the hurdles they faced creating new alien species, recreating the Romulans and Vulcans, and designing the terrifying creatures on Delta Vega for the new Star Trek.<\/li>\n<li>Score &#8211; As a fan of the original series, composer Michael Giacchino embraced the challenge of creating new music for Star Trek while preserving the spirit of Alexander Courage&#8217;s celebrated theme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/product\/B002JPYIUM?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=filmdetail-21&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creativeASIN=B002JPYIUM\">Blu-ray Disc<\/a><\/strong> version is a three-disc set (2xBD, 1xDigital Copy) in which you get all of the DVD extras plus several exclusives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD<\/li>\n<li>Commentary by director J.J. Likewise, costume designer Michael Kaplan talks about how he designed costumes that paid homage to a classic.<\/li>\n<li>Ben Burtt and the Sounds of Star Trek (HD) &#8211; When famed sound designer Ben Burtt was hired to create sounds for the first Star Wars film, he took his inspiration from the original &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; series.<\/li>\n<li>Gene Roddenberry&#8217;s Vision (HD) &#8211; J.J. Abrams, Leonard Nimoy, previous Star Trek writers and producers, and scientific consultant Carolyn Porco describe and commend the optimistic and enduring vision of Gene Roddenberry.<\/li>\n<li>Starfleet Vessel Simulator (HD) &#8211; Explore extensive data on the U.S.S.
