{"id":6956,"date":"2009-11-05T05:00:38","date_gmt":"2009-11-05T05:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/?p=6956"},"modified":"2009-11-05T05:00:38","modified_gmt":"2009-11-05T05:00:38","slug":"ken-auletta-speaks-to-c-span-about-google","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/2009\/11\/05\/ken-auletta-speaks-to-c-span-about-google\/","title":{"rendered":"Ken Auletta speaks to C-SPAN about Google"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/QV-2vCkwQ-I&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/QV-2vCkwQ-I&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Above is a lengthy and highly informative <a href=\"http:\/\/www.q-and-a.org\/\">C-SPAN<\/a> interview with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kenauletta.com\/\">Ken Auletta<\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/\">The New Yorker<\/a><\/span> <\/strong>about his new book on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google\">Google<\/a>, which is called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/product\/1594202354?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=filmdetail-21&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creativeASIN=1594202354\">Googled: The End of the World As We Know It<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some quotes and facts raised that particularly struck me:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Google is a surrogate (in many ways) for the Internet&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Google is a miraculous service for consumers but the problem is that it hurts businesses, especially media companies&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The Google founders start from the assumption that most things are inefficient&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The engineer is the content creator at Google&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Every minute 15 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube (which includes the above interview)<\/li>\n<li>Google&#8217;s initial funding was $25 million from 7 key investors<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AdSense\">Adsense<\/a> is essentially a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vickrey_auction\">Vickrey auction system<\/a> and\u00a0made Google $21 billion last year<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2008\/04\/11\/where-are-all-the-google-data-centers\/\">Google data center<\/a> looks like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zRwPSFpLX8I\">this<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zRwPSFpLX8I\"><\/a>Part of the reason Google are so secretive is because co-founder\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larry_Page\">Larry Page<\/a> once read a book about <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nikola_Tesla\">Nikolai Tesla<\/a> (one of the pioneers of electricity and radio) and felt he died poor and bitter because he was too open about his inventions and secrets.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeff_Bezos\">Jeff Bezos<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amazon.com\">Amazon<\/a> was an early investor in Google but this wasn&#8217;t widely known for quite a long time.
