{"id":6908,"date":"2009-10-28T21:42:32","date_gmt":"2009-10-28T21:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/?p=6908"},"modified":"2009-10-28T21:45:19","modified_gmt":"2009-10-28T21:45:19","slug":"stanley-kubrick-in-the-new-yorker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/2009\/10\/28\/stanley-kubrick-in-the-new-yorker\/","title":{"rendered":"Stanley Kubrick in The New Yorker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sliated.com\/kubrick\/kubrick_new_yorker.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6909\" title=\"Kubrick New Yorker profile\" src=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Kubrick-New-Yorker-profile.jpg\" alt=\"Kubrick New Yorker profile\" width=\"480\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Audio recently surfaced online of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stanley_Kubrick\">Stanley Kubrick<\/a><\/strong> being interviewed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edge.org\/3rd_culture\/bios\/bernstein.html\">Jeremy Bernstein<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/\">The New Yorker<\/a> in 1966 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/archives\/2009\/10\/01\/stanley-kubrick-interview-from-1966\/\">listen to it here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sliated.com\/kubrick.htm\">Sliated<\/a> has some interesting PDF files which shed more light on the famous director who was then in the midst of filming <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2001_(film)\">2001: A Space Odyssey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of them is <a href=\"http:\/\/sliated.com\/kubrick\/kubrick_new_yorker.pdf\">a PDF of the final\u00a0profile<\/a> which ended up in the November 1966 issue.<\/p>\n<p>But they also have<a href=\"http:\/\/sliated.com\/kubrick\/kubrick_auction.pdf\"> an auction entry which shows the proofs of the profile<\/a> with descriptions of the edits and annotations Kubrick wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Last, but not least, there is <a href=\"http:\/\/sliated.com\/kubrick\/bernstein.pdf\">a piece by Bernstein recalling the interview<\/a> which include the following nuggets of information about the legendary director:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kubrick had taken flying lessons but by the mid sixties never flew again as he considered it &#8220;too dangerous&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>For his move to England he transported his possessions in 140 Boy Scout foot lockers.<\/li>\n<li>He considered leaving the USA during the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cuban_Missile_Crisis\">Cuban missile crisis<\/a> and booked a boat trip to Australia with his family &#8211; but cancelled when he discovered he would have to share a bathroom with a neighbouring cabin.<\/li>\n<li>Before moving to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Childwick_Bury_Manor\">St Albans<\/a> Kubrick lived in a large apartment on Central Park West.<\/li>\n<li>2001 was shot at Elstree and during the filming Kubrick lived in a suite at the Dorchester Hotel.<\/li>\n<li>Physics was the only course in high school in which he had gotten a decent grade.<\/li>\n<li>Kubrick toyed with the idea of casting <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jackie_Mason\">Jackie Mason<\/a> (!) as the voice of HAL, although he may have been joking.<\/li>\n<li>During one take of a scene when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001158\/\">Keir Dullea<\/a> (who played astronaut <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Bowman_(fictional_character)\">Dave Bowman<\/a>) was talking to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HAL_9000\">HAL<\/a> he farted so loudly, it sounded like &#8220;a stupendous burst of machine gun fire&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>The interview was recorded on one of Kubrick&#8217;s tape recorders, upon which he did most of his screen writing.<\/li>\n<li>When the film was first shown to the press and invited guests in New York Kubrick ran the projector himself and decided to cut around 17 minutes from this version.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some interesting PDF files which shed new light on director Stanley Kubrick<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[19],"tags":[334],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6908"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=6908"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6908\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=6908"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=6908"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=6908"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
