Beyond the Clouds<\/a><\/strong> (Second Sight): Near the end of his professional career in 1995, Michelangelo Antonioni<\/a> embarked on this co-project with Wim Wenders<\/a>, an erotic drama based on his own short stories, which includes four tales linked by a director (John Malkovich<\/a>) in search of his next picture.<\/p>\n

Taking place in Ferrara<\/a>, Portofino<\/a>, Aix en Provence<\/a> and Paris<\/a>, each story features a woman at the centre of the story and the cast features Sophie Marceau<\/a>, Irene Jacob<\/a>, Fanny Ardant<\/a>, Jean Reno<\/a>, Vincent Perez<\/a>, Peter Weller<\/a>, Marcello Mastroianni<\/a> and Jeanne Moreau<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Included on this release is \u2018To Make A Film Is To Be Alive\u2019 a 52 minute documentary and an audio essay by Seymour Chatman<\/a> (author of Antonioni: The Complete Films<\/a>), along with a with production stills gallery.<\/p>\n

Although not in the same league as Antonioni’s very best work<\/a>, it is a fascinating project with some marvellous visuals, aided by an\u00a0evocative\u00a0score featuring memorable contributions from\u00a0Brian Eno and U2<\/a> (aka Passengers<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Is Anybody There?<\/a><\/strong> (Optimum):\u00a0Set in a sleepy British seaside town in the 1980s, this drama tells the story of a morbid, bookish 10-year-old boy Edward (Bill Milner<\/a>) who becomes increasingly obsessed with the afterlives of the residents of the old peoples\u2019 home which his parents run, until he is distracted by the arrival of ‘The Amazing’ Clarence (Michael Caine<\/a>), an anarchic retired magician and grieving widower who is determined to age disgracefully.<\/p>\n
