{"id":3239,"date":"2008-10-08T01:58:15","date_gmt":"2008-10-08T00:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/?p=3239"},"modified":"2010-11-06T16:44:53","modified_gmt":"2010-11-06T16:44:53","slug":"interview-matteo-garrone-on-gomorrah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/2008\/10\/08\/interview-matteo-garrone-on-gomorrah\/","title":{"rendered":"Interview: Matteo Garrone on Gomorrah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gomorrahmovie.co.uk\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3240\" title=\"Matteo Garrone - Director of Gomorrah\" src=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/matteo-garrone-profile.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0308520\/\">Matteo Garrone<\/a><\/strong> is the director of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gomorrahmovie.co.uk\/\">Gomorrah<\/a><\/strong>, a new film based on the best selling book by\u00a0<a title=\"Roberto Saviano\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roberto_Saviano\">Roberto Saviano<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It explores the world of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camorra\">the Comorrah<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"Mafia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mafia\">mafia<\/a>-like organisation based around the city\u00a0of\u00a0<a title=\"Naples\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naples\">Naples<\/a> in\u00a0Southern\u00a0<a title=\"Italy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italy\">Italy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The film follows five stories that are based on real life accounts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A young boy named\u00a0Toto (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm2992307\/\">Salvatore Abruzzese<\/a>) who is slowly sucked into the world of drug dealers near his housing estate<\/li>\n<li>An elderly accountant named Don Ciro (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0408238\/\">Gianfelice Imparato<\/a>) who acts as a courier for the relatives of imprisoned gang members<\/li>\n<li>A tailor named\u00a0Pasquale (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0134480\/\">Salvatore Cantalupo<\/a>) who endangers himself by trying to work for new company that isn&#8217;t controlled by organised crime<\/li>\n<li>A university graduate named\u00a0Roberto (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm2991708\/\">Carmine Paternoster<\/a>) who starts working for a toxic waste company that has ties to criminal gangs<\/li>\n<li>Two unruly young men called Marco (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm2991941\/\">Marco Macor<\/a>) and Ciro (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm2992261\/\">Ciro Petrone<\/a>) who fantasise about being mobsters when they uncover a stash of weapons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I recently spoke to Matteo in London where we discussed various aspects of the film, including: his initial reaction to the book; how he approached casting the various roles; the issues the film raises about contemporary <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italy\">Italy<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/daily.greencine.com\/archives\/006026.html\">the reaction<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.festival-cannes.com\/en\/festival.html\">the Cannes film festival<\/a> back in May and the music in the film by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Massive_Attack\">Massive Attack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>N.B.
