A spokeswoman for screen legend Paul Newman says the actor has died at age 83. Spokeswoman Marni Tomljanovic says Newman died Friday of cancer. No other details were immediately available.<\/p>\n

Newman was nominated for Academy Awards 10 times, winning a regular Oscar in 1987 for “The Color of Money” and two honorary ones. He was equally at home in comedies such as “The Sting” and dramas such as “Hud.”<\/p>\n

He sometimes teamed with his wife, Joanne Woodward, also an Oscar winner for the 1957 film “Three Faces of Eve.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

One of the most famous and enduring actors in Hollywood, his career spanned several decades and included roles in\u00a0Exodus<\/a> (1960),\u00a0The Hustler<\/a> (1961),\u00a0Hud<\/a> (1963),\u00a0Harper<\/a> (1966),\u00a0Hombre<\/a> (1967),\u00a0Cool Hand Luke<\/a> (1967),\u00a0The Towering Inferno<\/a> (1974),\u00a0Slap Shot<\/a> (1977) and\u00a0The Verdict<\/a> (1982).<\/p>\n

He also memorably teamed with\u00a0Robert Redford<\/a> and director\u00a0George Roy Hill<\/a> for\u00a0Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid<\/a> (1969) and\u00a0The Sting<\/a> (1973).<\/p>\n

Although his first marriage ended in divorce, his second to Joanne Woodward<\/a> became famous for being one of the most enduring in the history of Hollywood.<\/p>\n

She won an Oscar at the very start of their marriage,\u00a0for her performance in The Three Faces of Eve<\/a> (1959) and they went on to appear together in\u00a0films like\u00a0The Long, Hot Summer<\/a> (1958),\u00a0From the Terrace<\/a> (1960),\u00a0Paris Blues<\/a> (1961),\u00a0A New Kind of Love<\/a> (1963),\u00a0Winning<\/a> (1969),\u00a0The Drowning Pool<\/a> (1975),\u00a0Harry & Son<\/a> (1984) and\u00a0Mr. and Mrs. Bridge<\/a> (1990).<\/p>\n

He lived away from Hollywood in\u00a0Connecticut<\/a> and was devoted to his wife and family. When asked about infidelity, he quipped:<\/p>\n

“Why go out for hamburger when you have steak at home?”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Although he he had been nominated for Oscars he didn’t actually win Best Actor until the mid-80s \u00a0when he reprised\u00a0his role of “Fast” Eddie Felson in\u00a0The Color of Money<\/a> (1986) which was directed by\u00a0Martin Scorsese<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His last film role on screen was as an Irish mob boss in\u00a0Road to Perdition<\/a> (2002), which he starred in alongside\u00a0Tom Hanks<\/a>, but his final work in a movie was as the voice of\u00a0Doc Hudson in the Pixar animation hit Cars<\/a> (2006).<\/p>\n

Outside of his film career, Newman had a passion for\u00a0motorsports<\/a> which he discovered while training for and filming the 1969 film\u00a0Winning<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He won several national championships in Sports Car Club of America road racing and his race teams won several championships in open wheel Indy Car racing.<\/p>\n

Politically liberal, he campaigned for various issues and politicians down the years.<\/p>\n

This 1981 debate with the conservative Charlton Heston<\/a> about a freeze<\/a> on nuclear weapons<\/a> showed his political side:<\/p>\n

A noted philanthropist, he raised millions of dollars for charity through his food company\u00a0Newman’s Own<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Best known for their salad dressings,\u00a0Newman donated all profits and royalties to charity and – as of 2007 – it has made over US$220 million for good causes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Back in June of this year it was widely reported that Newman had been diagnosed with\u00a0lung cancer<\/a> and was receiving treatment.<\/p>\n

In August, Newman had\u00a0reportedly\u00a0finished chemotherapy and told his family that he wished to die at home in\u00a0Westport, Connecticut<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He passed away yesterday\u00a0and is survived by\u00a0Woodward, along with his five daughters and two grandchildren.<\/p>\n
