{"id":16529,"date":"2017-02-22T14:45:26","date_gmt":"2017-02-22T14:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/?p=16529"},"modified":"2017-02-22T14:45:26","modified_gmt":"2017-02-22T14:45:26","slug":"blu-ray-heat-1995","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/2017\/02\/22\/blu-ray-heat-1995\/","title":{"rendered":"Blu-ray: Heat (1995)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For those not familiar with the story, it\u00a0details the slow-burn clash between a highly\u00a0sophisticated crew of L.A. thieves (led by Robert De Niro) and the detective (Al Pacino) who is obsessively chasing them.<\/p>\n<p>It remains Mann&#8217;s best work: an outstanding portrait of two seemingly unstoppable forces colliding amidst the backdrop of a stunningly realised Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2GfZl4kuVNI\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Although well received at the time, it was perhaps seen as a high-grade genre piece and nothing more. But its status\u00a0has grown exponentially since, with\u00a0the new transfer enhancing a film\u00a0over twenty years old.<\/p>\n<p>Many other things could be said about Heat: the last truly great performances of Pacino and De Niro, a\u00a0raft of excellent support in the brilliant ensemble cast; superb visuals by Dante Spinotti; an immense\u00a0sound design and score by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elliot_Goldenthal\">Elliot Goldenthal<\/a>, with\u00a0memorable musical contributions by <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2kM2LIH\">Moby<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2lLtOUd\">Brian Eno<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JHJCrpvYyMo\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9PAWbXyP1yE\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Overseen by director Michael Mann, this Blu-ray\u00a0was\u00a0sourced from a new 4K remaster by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.company3.com\/artists\/stefan-sonnenfeld\/\">Stefan Sonnenfeld of Company 3<\/a>\u00a0and looks far superior to the\u00a02009 version.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blu-ray.com\/movies\/Heat-Blu-ray\/170336\/\">Blu-ray.com have some\u00a0technical details<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you have a very large screen or a projector you will immediately notice <strong>improvements in terms of depth and fluidity<\/strong>. The difference is <strong>especially obvious during<\/strong> <strong>close-ups<\/strong> &#8212; as virtually all of them have <strong>a much &#8216;tighter&#8217; appearance<\/strong> now &#8212; but <strong>during larger panoramic shots delineation is also superior<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During a lot of the <strong>indoor footage<\/strong> the images <strong>also appear better balanced and smoother<\/strong> (not artificially repolished\u00a0with digital tools). To be perfectly clear, the darker\/indoor footage actually makes it quite clear that <strong>the master that was used to produce the release is of exceptionally high-quality<\/strong> because density is quite simply outstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Image stability is <strong>outstanding<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What of the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;outstanding. It has an excellent range of nuanced dynamics and during the shootouts intensity is fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>I did some direct comparisons during the famous bank sequence at the end of the film and I want to specifically mention that the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track from the previous release actually does a pretty good job of reproducing many, if not all, of the same qualities that define the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.<\/p>\n<p>Where the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track appears to have an edge is the expanded depth, though I can only speculate about the type of remastering work that might have been done to improve it.
