The Artist won five awards, including Best Picture<\/a>, Best Director<\/a>,\u00a0(Michael Hazanavicius) and Best Actor<\/a>\u00a0(Jean Dujardin<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady<\/a>) was awarded\u00a0Best Actress<\/a>, whilst in the supporting categories Christopher Plummer (Beginners) and Octavia Spencer (The Help) won for their respective roles.<\/p>\n

Hugo was the big winner in the technical categories, winning Cinematography<\/a>, Sound Editing<\/a> and Mixing<\/a>, Art Direction<\/a> and Visual Effects<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Artist also became the the first silent film to win Best Picture since\u00a0Wings<\/a>\u00a0(1927),\u00a0which won the same prize at the very\u00a0first Academy Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So in a year that has seen great changes as cinema shifts from celluloid to digital<\/a>, there was something appropriate in the big winners being tributes to the silent era<\/a>\u00a0and one of its true pioneers,\u00a0Georges M\u00e9li\u00e8s<\/a>.<\/p>\n
