Ben Gazzara passed away yesterday at the age of 81.<\/p>\n

As an actor he starred in many significant films, both in lead and supporting roles.<\/p>\n

His CV includes films with such directors as Otto Preminger<\/a>\u00a0(Anatomy of a Murder), John\u00a0Cassavetes<\/a>\u00a0(several films including Husbands), Giuseppe Tornatore<\/a>\u00a0(The Professor), Peter Bogdanovich<\/a>\u00a0(They All Laughed), David Mamet<\/a>\u00a0(The Spanish Prisoner),\u00a0The Coen Brothers<\/a> (The Big Lebowski), Vincent Gallo<\/a>\u00a0(Buffalo 66),\u00a0Todd Solondz<\/a> (Happiness), Spike Lee<\/a>\u00a0(Summer of Sam) and Lars von Trier<\/a>\u00a0(Dogville).<\/p>\n

On hearing the news, my immediate thought was his\u00a0riotous\u00a0appearance\u00a0on The Dick Cavett Show, promoting Husbands in 1970 with John Cassevetes (a regular\u00a0collaborator and friend) and Peter Falk.<\/p>\n

Here it is and it reminds you of the days when chat show\u00a0appearances\u00a0weren’t filled with PR-led soundbites:<\/p>\n
