{"id":12723,"date":"2011-08-18T01:54:44","date_gmt":"2011-08-18T00:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/?p=12723"},"modified":"2011-08-18T02:00:39","modified_gmt":"2011-08-18T01:00:39","slug":"huge-dvd-guardian-review-misleading-quote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/2011\/08\/18\/huge-dvd-guardian-review-misleading-quote\/","title":{"rendered":"Huge-ly Misleading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Huge-DVD-quote.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12724\" title=\"Huge DVD quote\" src=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Huge-DVD-quote.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The DVD cover for the British film <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1457726\/\">Huge<\/a><\/strong> features a misleading quote.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the cover below and you&#8217;ll see that someone from The Guardian found it &#8216;heartfelt&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Huge-DVD-Noel-Clarke\/dp\/B005EWRJIK\/ref=sr_1_2?s=dvd&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1313628462&amp;sr=1-2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12725\" title=\"Huge DVD cover\" src=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Huge-DVD-cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"792\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This would normally indicate a positive review, but if you actually hunt down <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/film\/2011\/jul\/07\/huge-review\">the full review on The Guardian&#8217;s website<\/a>, you&#8217;ll find Xan Brooks wasn&#8217;t too impressed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/film\/2011\/jul\/07\/huge-review\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12726\" title=\"Guardian review of Huge\" src=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Guardian-review-of-Huge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not only does he give it two stars, but the full sentence containing the word &#8216;heartfelt&#8217; reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The tale is heartfelt but the technique is shot&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know about you but the second half of that sentence isn&#8217;t exactly a ringing endorsement is it?<\/p>\n<p>What about the remote chance that another Guardian writer found the film to his liking and also used the word &#8216;heartfelt&#8217;?<\/p>\n<p>No, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/search?q=guardian+film+huge+comedy+heartfelt&amp;section=film\">that didn&#8217;t happen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although not quite up there with &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/discussion\/comment-permalink\/800000\">freelance runners<\/a>&#8216; from UK distributors\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/film\/filmblog\/2007\/mar\/16\/howprsinvadedmyblog\">planting comments on blogs<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/4741259.stm\">the major studio who <em>invented<\/em> a critic to lavish praise on its own movies<\/a>, it&#8217;s still pretty misleading.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asa.org.uk\">Advertising Standards Authority<\/a> is the body that regulates the UK advertising industry and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asa.org.uk\/ASA-Action\/Adjudications\/Display-Code.aspx?CodeId={9B5E0219-0E8B-4F00-BAAB-1FFE517F433E}&amp;ItemId={BFDBBCAA-11DC-4307-B757-EC700DD95A95}\">its code of practice states<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;no marketing communication should mislead, or be likely to mislead, by inaccuracy, ambiguity, exaggeration, omission or otherwise&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In this case, I think the quote on the Huge DVD cover misleads by omission.<\/p>\n<p>Can you think of any other examples of reviews taken out of context?<\/p>\n<p>&gt;
