networking and microblogging service <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\">Twitter<\/a><\/strong> is five years old today.<\/p>\n<p>Since launching in 2006 it gradually exploded in popularity and now has an estimated 190 million users around the world who generate millions of tweets a day.<\/p>\n<p>Like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Facebook\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/YouTube\">YouTube<\/a> it has become a massive extension of the web as people exchange all kinds of information<\/p>\n<p>This presentation by co-founder <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jack_Dorsey\">Jack Dorsey<\/a> is a fascinating insight into what inspired the site and how it began:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VArdDyvcdao\">weather reports<\/a> but his feed is now as\u00a0unpredictable\u00a0and wonderful as his films.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/AIannucci\"><strong>Armando Iannucci<\/strong><\/a>: The director of In the Loop regularly posts sharp insights on politics and culture.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/johnaugust\">John August<\/a><\/strong>: The screenwriter runs a very useful website and runs an active twitter critics.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/NikkiFinke\">Nikki Finke<\/a><\/strong>: Widely read feed of Deadline Hollywood site which regularly breaks stories from the film and TV industry.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/metacritic\/\">Metacritic<\/a><\/strong>: The best movie review aggregating site posts update on what the critics think of films.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/ebertchicago\">Roger Ebert<\/a><\/strong>: The venerable Chicago film critic posts all manner of interesting links on a daily
