DVD & BLU-RAY PICKS

Submarine (Optimum Home Entertainment): This smart and beautifully crafted coming-of-age story marks an auspicious directorial debut for Richard Ayoade. Set in Swansea and based on Joe Dunthorneโ€™s novel, it explores the growing pains of 15-year old Oliver (Craig Roberts) as he falls in love with classmate Jordana (Yasmin Paige) and also struggles to prevent a new-age neighbour (Paddy Considine) from splitting up his parents (Noah Taylor and Sally Hawkins). The Lavender Hill Mob (Optimum Home Entertainment): Classic 1951 Ealing comedy about an unassuming bank clerk (Alec Guinness) whose plan to steal gold bullion takes them to Paris. Directed by Charles Crichton, it co-stars Stanley Holloway, Sid James and Alfie Bass. This version has been fully restored and comes with extra features including an introduction by Martin Scorsese, who is a huge fan of the film. An interesting side note is that 37 years later Crichton would go on to direct A Fish Called Wanda (1988). [Buy from Amazon UK on Blu-ray or DVD]
