{"id":9224,"date":"2010-09-26T00:31:43","date_gmt":"2010-09-25T23:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/?p=9224"},"modified":"2010-09-26T00:31:43","modified_gmt":"2010-09-25T23:31:43","slug":"free-films-on-youtube","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/2010\/09\/26\/free-films-on-youtube\/","title":{"rendered":"Free films on YouTube"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/movies\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9225\" title=\"YouTube Movies\" src=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/YouTube-Movies.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>YouTube has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/movies\">several movies<\/a> you can legally watch for free, but what \u00a0are the best of the bunch?<\/p>\n<p>There is obviously a lot of film related content on the world&#8217;s largest video site, including a lot of &#8216;unofficial&#8217; clips and even full length films chopped up into 10 minute chunks.<\/p>\n<p>Recent reports suggest Google (who own the site) have <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/5624954\/google-planning-pay+per+view-movies-for-youtube\">been in\u00a0talks with Hollywood studios<\/a> to launch a global pay-per-view video section by the end of this year.<\/p>\n<p>Although it hasn&#8217;t got a great deal of press, they already have a dedicated movie section (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/movies\">www.youtube.com\/movies<\/a>) where users can legally stream films.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, these are often titles which have fallen out of copyright or been sanctioned by their owners.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, some of the films vary in quality so below is a list of the best ones currently there.<\/p>\n<p>(Just click on the title for the YouTube link).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1b24wqhy0Zo&amp;ob=av1e\">The General<\/a><\/strong> (Dir. Clyde Bruckman &amp; Buster Keaton, 1927): Classic silent comedy starring Buster Keaton as a train engineer during the US Civil War.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rD_-flw9IcQ\">Metropolis<\/a><\/strong> (Dir. Fritz Lang): The classic\u00a0<a title=\"German expressionism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_expressionism\">German expressionist<\/a> film set in a futuristic city depicted the tensions between workers and bosses.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y8axb9AoO0U\">Carnival of Souls<\/a><\/strong> (Dir. Herk Harvey, 1962): Cult horror film about a woman who is involved in a car accident and becomes drawn to a mysterious, abandoned carnival.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=I8fVnXXMw60\"><strong>Cathy Come Home<\/strong><\/a> (Dir. Ken Loach, 1966): A landmark BBC drama about a family in 1960s Britain struggling to deal with unemployment and\u00a0homelessness.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jfShkumjeq8\">Night of the Living Dead<\/a><\/strong> (Dir. George A Romero, 1968): The classic independent zombie movie, which influenced a generation of filmmakers.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5N7Z5zsvha4\">Salaam Bombay!<\/a><\/strong> (Dir. Mira Nair, 1988): A Hindi film which\u00a0chronicles the life of children living on the streets of\u00a0<a title=\"Mumbai\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mumbai\">Mumbai<\/a> (then known as Bombay).<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WH9J48jlUE0\">Land and Freedom<\/a><\/strong> (Dir. Ken Loach, 1995): A drama about a young man from Liverpool (Ian Hart) who goes off to fight facism in the Spanish Civil War.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-1FJAQrpWD0\">The Funeral<\/a><\/strong> (Dir. Abel Ferrara): Gangster film centered around a family of New York gangsters in the 1930s, starring <a title=\"Christopher Walken\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christopher_Walken\">Christopher Walken<\/a> and\u00a0<a title=\"Chris Penn\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chris_Penn\">Chris Penn<\/a> and\u00a0<a title=\"Annabella Sciorra\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Annabella_Sciorra\">Annabella Sciorra<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XdALCXGshu0\">Bob Dylan 1966 World Tour, The Home Movies: Through the Camera of Mickey Jones<\/a><\/strong> (Dir. Joel Gilbert, 2003): Documentary that features rare footage of Dylan touring at his peak, when he traded in his acoustic guitar for an electric sound.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RO6hfx_tEqE&amp;ob=av1e\">Undertow<\/a><\/strong> (Dir. David Gordon Green, 2004): Indie drama set in Georgia about two bothers (Jamie Bell and Devon Alan) who go on the run from their dangerous uncle (Josh Lucas). Look out for a pre-Twilight <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kristen_Stewart\">Kristen Stewart<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YfH8dVhPnVE\">Hannah Takes The Stairs<\/a><\/strong> (Dir.
