{"id":9079,"date":"2010-09-11T23:09:38","date_gmt":"2010-09-11T22:09:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/?p=9079"},"modified":"2010-09-11T23:11:18","modified_gmt":"2010-09-11T22:11:18","slug":"the-sounds-of-inception","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/2010\/09\/11\/the-sounds-of-inception\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sounds of Inception"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/magazine\/2010\/06\/pl_screen_crashsounds\/?pid=2606\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9080\" title=\"Sounds of Inception\" src=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Sounds-of-Inception.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the key features of any film is the sound design, a critical but sometimes overlooked aspect of the production process.<\/p>\n<p>This video from the <a href=\"http:\/\/soundworkscollection.com\">Soundworks Collection<\/a> shows how the sounds of Christopher Nolan&#8217;s <strong>Inception<\/strong> were created, featuring  interviews with supervising sound editor and sound designer Richard King, Re-recording Mixer Lora Hirschberg and Re-recording mixer Gary Rizzo.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/13396749?byline=0&amp;portrait=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/13396749\">&#8220;Inception&#8221; Sound for Film Profile<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/colemanfilm\">Michael Coleman<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another aspect of the soundscape of Inception was the use of Edith Piaf&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Non,_je_ne_regrette_rien\">Non, je ne regrette rien<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Originally I thought this might be some kid of reference to Marillon Cotillard (as she played Piaf in a 2006 biopic) but it turns out composer Hans Zimmer and Nolan wanted to use the song as the basis for the whole score.<\/p>\n<p>Zimmer <a href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/28\/hans-zimmer-extracts-the-secrets-of-the-inception-score\/?ref=music\">explained the process to the New York Times<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;all the music in the score is subdivisions and multiplications of the tempo of the Edith Piaf track.\u00a0[It was] always in the script &#8230;It was like huge foghorns over a city, and afterward you would maybe figure out that they were related.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t use the song; I only used one note. [I got] the original master out of the French national archives.
