{"id":13994,"date":"2012-01-12T03:43:47","date_gmt":"2012-01-12T03:43:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/?p=13994"},"modified":"2012-01-12T03:58:03","modified_gmt":"2012-01-12T03:58:03","slug":"profitable-films-2007-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/2012\/01\/12\/profitable-films-2007-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"Profitable Films 2007-2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Profitable-Movies-2007-2011.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13995\" title=\"Profitable Movies 2007-2011\" src=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Profitable-Movies-2007-2011.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What were the most profitable movies of the last few years?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/david_mccandless_the_beauty_of_data_visualization.html\">David McCandless<\/a> and his team at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.informationisbeautiful.net\">Information is Beautiful<\/a> have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.informationisbeautiful.net\/2012\/hollywood-budgets-a-data-viz-challenge\/\">challenged people to visualise<\/a> some <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/hollywoodbudgets\">Hollywood data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They have compiled movie statistics consisting of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lead studio<\/li>\n<li>Reviews<\/li>\n<li>Story Type<\/li>\n<li>Genre<\/li>\n<li>Grosses<\/li>\n<li>Budget<\/li>\n<li>Profitability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>McCandless puts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.informationisbeautiful.net\/2012\/hollywood-budgets-a-data-viz-challenge\/\">special emphasis on profitability<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It always bugs me how Hollywood grades or broadcasts the success of a film by gross income. Profitability, or % of Budget Recovered, is a way better grade of a film\u2019s success.\u00a0Especially in America, where each film has such high printing and advertising costs, that it needs to recover about 250-300% of its budget to be deemed a true hit.\u00a0In fact, if you use Profitability as an index, it changes the view considerably. Take 2007, for example, where the biggest grossing film was Pirates Of The Caribbean: At Worlds End.
