{"id":13690,"date":"2011-12-06T19:02:32","date_gmt":"2011-12-06T19:02:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/?p=13690"},"modified":"2011-12-06T22:51:29","modified_gmt":"2011-12-06T22:51:29","slug":"earth-2-another-earth-kepler-22b","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/2011\/12\/06\/earth-2-another-earth-kepler-22b\/","title":{"rendered":"Earth 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Earth-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13691\" title=\"Earth 2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Earth-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-16040655\">discovery of an Earth-like planet<\/a> coincides with the UK release of a film about &#8230;an Earth-like planet.<\/p>\n<p>Back in January a film called <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/2011\/11\/30\/another-earth-review-mike-chaill-brit-marling\/\">Another Earth<\/a><\/strong> debuted to <a href=\"http:\/\/mubi.com\/notebook\/posts\/sundance-2011-mike-cahills-another-earth\">considerable surprise and acclaim at the Sundance film festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The central premise involves a student (Brit Marling) and music teacher (William Mapother) whose fates intersect amidst the discovery of another planet identical to Earth.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of the most acclaimed titles of the festival, winning the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alfred_P._Sloan_Prize\">Alfred P. Sloan Prize<\/a> and getting acquired by Fox Searchlight Pictures for distribution.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N8hEwMMDtFY\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"410\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Then in February, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-12354390\">astronomers announced<\/a> that the advanced <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kepler_(spacecraft)\">Kepler Space Telescope<\/a> had helped them identify around 54 planets, five of which were &#8220;Earth-sized&#8221; and where conditions could possibly sustain life.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, <a href=\"http:\/\/kepler.nasa.gov\/Science\/ForScientists\/keplerconference\/\">NASA revealed further developments<\/a> at the first Kepler Science Conference, where they confirmed the existence of an Earth-like planet.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/en5OObU0ryU?hd=1\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Named <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kepler-22b\">Kepler 22-b<\/a>, it lies around 600 light-years away, is about 2.4 times the size of earth and is the closest confirmed planet to our own.<\/p>\n<p>Although it is unclear if it is made mostly of rock, gas or liquid, the main reason it has been dubbed an &#8220;Earth 2.0&#8221; is because it revolves around a star and circles around it every 290 days.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kepler-22b\">Wikipedia entry does the numbers<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The planet&#8217;s radius is roughly 2.4 times the radius of Earth; it is 600 light years away from Earth, in orbit around the G-type star Kepler 22.<\/p>\n<p>If it has an Earth-like density (5.515 g\/cm3) then it would mass 13.8 Earths while its surface gravity would be 2.4 times Earth&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>If it has water like density (1 g\/cm3) then it would mass 2.5 Earths and have a surface gravity of 0.43 times Earth&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>The distance from Kepler-22b to its star is about 15% less than the distance from Earth to the Sun, hence its orbit is about 85% of Earth&#8217;s orbit.<\/p>\n<p>One orbital revolution around its star takes 289.9 days.<\/p>\n<p>The light output of Kepler-22b&#8217;s star is about 25% less than that of the Sun.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another Earth opened in the US at selected cinemas during the summer and got released on Blu-ray and DVD there last week.<\/p>\n<p>It opens in UK cinemas this week and in an age where online agencies are desperately trying to drum up interest with phony virals, here is a genuine one that has fallen right into their lap with perfect timing.<\/p>\n<p>IndieWire <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.indiewire.com\/theplaylist\/exclusive-earth-2-emerges-in-deleted-scene-from-another-earth\">recently hosted a deleted scene from the film<\/a> which shows a news clip of the discovery and there is another\u00a0scene where Brit Marling&#8217;s character looks up the website for a chance to travel to Earth 2:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ljHHr964dx0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"410\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t possible in real life yet as 600 million light years presents a challenge for even the fastest rocket.<\/p>\n<p>That said, this year did see the basic foundation of modern physics <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-15791236\">rocked by two experiments at CERN<\/a>, which appeared to demonstrate that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neutrino\">neutrinos<\/a> may travel faster than light, even though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/science\/2011\/nov\/21\/faster-than-light-neutrinos-doubts\">some later cast doubt on that<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What this shows is that life can imitate art, as our technical realities catch up with our\u00a0creative\u00a0fantasies.<\/p>\n<p>Stanley Kubrick&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2001:_A_Space_Odyssey_(film)\">2001: A Space Odyssey<\/a> seemed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JQ8pQVDyaLo\">predict the iPad<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wN1Hp6jhh0U\">Siri<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Truman_Show\">The Truman Show<\/a> predicted <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Truman_Show#Media\">the rise of reality TV<\/a> in the 2000s and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minority_Report_(film)\">Minority Report<\/a> foresaw <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Technologies_in_Minority_Report\">multi-touch computing and the Kinect<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b_O_dOMG3oo?hd=1\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In terms of timing Another Earth seems spooky, but there are other films which had news stories dovetail with their release.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_China_Syndrome\">The China Syndrome<\/a> (1979) &#8211; a drama about an accident at a nuclear power plant &#8211; was released on March 16th 1979, just 12 days before the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Three_Mile_Island_accident\">Three Mile Island nuclear accident<\/a> in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QBl-w4J0Xtk\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"410\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the film, someone actually says that the China Syndrome would render &#8220;an area the size of Pennsylvania&#8221; permanently uninhabitable.<\/p>\n<p>John Frankenheimer made two political thrillers in the early 1960s &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6bMrAhe_K6A\">The Manchurian Candidate<\/a> (1962) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fRiZtqVPJ9U\">Seven Days in May<\/a> (1964) &#8211; which had creepy parallels with the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Assassination_of_John_F._Kennedy\">Kennedy\u00a0assassination<\/a>\u00a0and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cuban_Missile_Crisis\">Cuban missile crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wag_the_Dog\">Wag the Dog<\/a> (1997) &#8211; a satire about a spin doctor trying to cover up a presidential affair &#8211; opened just one month before the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewinsky_scandal\">Lewinsky scandal<\/a> blew up in January 1998.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CNo0BicRM8k\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"410\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Lars Von Trier&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/2011\/10\/04\/melancholia-review-lars-von-trier\/\">Melancholia<\/a>, which opened earlier this year, also featured a premise where there was another planet heading towards earth.<\/p>\n<p>So whilst there are precedents, the news of another &#8216;earth&#8217; in the same week Another Earth actually opens in the UK seems like viral marketing from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oU4Rk0NATNs\">superior alien intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&gt; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmdetail.com\/2011\/11\/30\/another-earth-review-mike-chaill-brit-marling\/\">Another Earth<\/a><br \/>\n&gt;
