Standard Operating ProcedureĀ (Sony):Ā A disturbing but fascinating documentary in which directorĀ Errol MorrisĀ examinesĀ the photographsĀ taken during the abuses atĀ Abu Ghraib prison in 2003. Using interviews with the soldiers, Morris weaves their stories together with the actual images, re-enactments and graphics to create a chilling portrait of one of the most notorious episodes of the Iraq war.

Pineapple Express (Sony): AĀ comedy about two pot-smoking slackers (Seth Rogen and James Franco) who go on the run, directed byĀ David Gordon GreenĀ (a big change of pace for him after films likeĀ George WashingtonĀ andĀ All The Real Girls). Co-written by Rogen and produced byĀ Judd ApatowĀ it is an amusing caper although it isnāt quite as laugh-out-loud funny as previous Apatow productions likeĀ SuperbadĀ andĀ Knocked Up. Despite that there are enough decent action sequences and gags to recommend it.

Somers TownĀ (Optimum): TheĀ latest film fromĀ Shane MeadowsĀ didn’t reach the heights of This is England, but was still a charming urban tale of an unlikely friendship between two teenagers inĀ an area of North London.Ā Thomas TurgooseĀ andĀ Piotr JagielloĀ were very good in the two lead roles and Perry Benson offered solid support as an Arsenal supporting deckchair seller.

Standard Operating Procedure website
The website for Standard Operating Procedure is now live.
It is the new documentary from director Errol Morris and deals with the photographs taken during the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq.
The website for his last film – The Fog of War – won a Webby Award in 2004 and this one has a similar use of flash.
It also stresses the the importance of the actual photos as they are scattered all over the site.
As Morris says in the official Q&A:
It all starts with the photographs. They are at the core of this whole project.
270 photographs were given to the Army Criminal Investigation Division, and many of them appear in the movie.
Standard Operating Procedure is my attempt to tell the story behind these photographs, to examine the context in which they were taken.
People think they understand the photographs, that they are selfexplanatory.
They think they know what they are about ā but do they, really? Thatās the question.
Megan Ambuhl, one of the soldiers in the movie, asks: have we looked āoutside the frame?ā This film is an attempt to do that.
The film opens in the US on April 25th in limited release
